Our Principles

The professional, ethical and operational principles that shape every Lumen relationship.

Lumen's principles are not a statement of ambition. They are operating standards that determine who we work with, how we make introductions and how we protect the quality of the network.

Six standards

01

Relevance over volume

We prioritise the quality and fit of a relationship over the number of introductions. A smaller number of relevant conversations is more valuable than a large network that is not useful.

02

Confidentiality by default

Context shared with Lumen is treated with care. We do not pass contact details or sensitive information to another party without consent.

03

Independence

Lumen is not controlled by a fund, company or project in the network. We make judgements about fit, not about who is owed a favour.

04

Professionalism

We prepare properly, communicate clearly and respect the time of every participant. Accuracy and responsiveness are part of the service.

05

Long-term collaboration

We look for relationships that can develop over time, not only transactions that close quickly. The quality of the relationship is the measure.

06

Clarity and accountability

We explain what we can do, what we cannot do and what happens next. We do not hide behind vague promises or artificial urgency.

How the principles apply

PrincipleIn practice
RelevanceWe assess stage, sector, timing and readiness before suggesting an introduction.
ConfidentialityWe share context only with consent and only to the extent needed for a specific conversation.
IndependenceWe do not accept mandates that require us to favour one participant over another.
ProfessionalismWe respond, prepare and follow through. We correct mistakes quickly.
Long-term collaborationWe stay interested in how a relationship develops after the first meeting.
ClarityWe are direct about fit, timing and the limits of our role.

Confidentiality in detail

Lumen holds two kinds of information: information shared by participants and information about the network itself. Neither is public by default.

  • We do not publish a list of network participants.
  • We do not share a participant's contact details without their agreement.
  • We do not forward pitch materials, cap tables or personal data to another party without a clear reason and consent.
  • We expect participants to treat information shared by others with the same care.

Where a conversation requires more detailed disclosure, the participants should agree the scope and any confidentiality arrangements directly.

Independence and conflicts

Lumen's independence is structural and behavioural. We do not act as an agent for any single fund, company or project, and we do not make decisions on behalf of participants. If a potential conflict arises, we disclose it or decline the engagement.

Being independent does not mean being neutral about quality. We are willing to say that a project is not ready, that a partnership does not make sense or that the timing is wrong. That judgement is part of the value we provide.

Conduct we expect

Participants in the network are expected to:

  • provide accurate information about their identity, project and intentions;
  • respect confidentiality and the privacy of others;
  • communicate professionally and in good faith;
  • avoid misrepresenting Lumen, its role or its relationships;
  • comply with the laws and regulations that apply to them.

Lumen reserves the right to decline or end a relationship where these standards are not met.

A living standard

These principles guide how the network operates today. As Lumen develops new initiatives and formats, the same standards will apply. If you have a question about how a principle applies to a specific situation, raise it through the official Connect page.
