How Lumen Works

The operating principles behind Lumen - context, relevance, introductions and long-term collaboration.

Lumen is built around a simple operating logic: understand the context, test for relevance, make a considered introduction and stay involved long enough for the relationship to develop. Everything else is secondary.

The operating model

  1. Understand the context. Every engagement starts with a conversation about what you are building, investing in or looking for - and why now. The objective is to understand the substance, not to collect a pitch.

  2. Filter for relevance. Lumen assesses whether there is a credible counterpart within the network. This includes stage, sector, geography, timing, readiness and the quality of the potential fit.

  3. Prepare the introduction. When there is a fit, both sides receive context before they speak: who the other party is, why the conversation is relevant and what each side is looking for.

  4. Support the follow-through. An introduction is a beginning. Lumen remains available to help clarify next steps, surface additional connections and keep the relationship moving where appropriate.

Finding relevant opportunities

Lumen does not run an automated matching engine or publish an open list of opportunities. Relevance is a judgement, not a keyword match. A fund with a Web3 thesis may still not be right for a particular project because of stage, ticket size, geography or timing. A corporate partner may be strategically relevant but not ready to move.

The network is reviewed against a set of practical questions:

  • Is there a clear reason for the two parties to speak?
  • Is the timing right for both sides?
  • Does the participant have the context and authority to engage?
  • Is the potential value mutual, rather than one-sided?
  • Would an introduction still make sense if no transaction followed?

If the answer to any of these is no, the right action is usually to wait or to look for a better connection.

How introductions work

Lumen introductions are context-first and double opt-in. That means:

  1. We understand enough about both sides to believe there is a real fit.
  2. We confirm that both sides are open to the introduction.
  3. We share a short, accurate summary of why the conversation is relevant.
  4. We make the introduction and let the participants take it from there.

Lumen does not share contact details without consent. We do not make mass introductions or pass a list of contacts to one side. The introduction is the beginning of a relationship between the participants, not a transaction with Lumen at the centre.

What Lumen does - and does not do

Lumen doesLumen does not
Build context around a specific requestPublish a public catalogue of opportunities
Curate relevant introductionsGuarantee access to a particular person or fund
Provide strategic and operational perspectiveProvide investment, legal, tax or financial advice
Support the development of a relationshipAct as an agent or make decisions for participants
Protect confidentiality and handle context carefullyShare contact details without consent

Confidentiality and independence

Conversations with Lumen are treated as confidential. We share context with a potential counterpart only when it is necessary for an introduction and only with the participant's agreement. We also expect participants to treat information shared by others with the same care.

Independence is equally important. Lumen is not owned by, controlled by or acting on behalf of any fund, company or project in the network. This allows us to prioritise the quality of the fit and to be direct when a particular path does not make sense.

The role of the participant

Lumen can open a door, but it cannot walk through it for you. The most successful relationships involve participants who:

  • are clear about what they need and what they can offer;
  • respond in a timely and professional way;
  • do their own diligence and make their own decisions;
  • treat the other party's time and information with respect;
  • stay engaged after the first conversation.
